In today’s market there are only two options when residing your home, vinyl and fiber cement. I’ll begin with the latter.
Fiber cement siding is a composite siding that has taken the place of the old wood siding. It is a beautiful product and is the primary siding used for new homes in upscale neighborhoods. Aesthetics is the best feature of fiber cement. It simulates wood siding and because it is a painted product, the color choices are infinite. Composite siding does not warp, rot or mold like old wood siding.
Fiber cement can also be purchased as a prefinished product from the factory. This does narrow down options in terms of color, but a factory finish also carries a 50 year color fast warranty.
There are two main negative aspects to the fiber cement option. 1. Price- Fiber Cement tends to cost at least twice as much as vinyl. This cost difference is due to material and additional labor costs. 2. Maintenance- Because fiber cement is a painted product, like anything else on your home it has to be painted on a somewhat regular basis, unless you get it factory prefinished. Vinyl Siding is by far the most popular choice when replacing siding on your home. It is a maintenance free product and offers a large color palette.
Vinyl siding offers many great profiles and the design of the panels has become so sophisticated it is difficult to tell the difference between vinyl, wood and fiber cement.
